MAINTENANCE (LANDSCAPE ASSISTANT) JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB INFORMATION

  • Classification: Landscape Assistant (Operations/Maintenance I, II or III)
  • Pay Range: Pay is determined on an annual basis by the Board of Park Commissioners
  • Supervisor: Works under the general and detailed supervision of the Landscape Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

This position works as a team to maintain landscape plantings throughout Bismarck Parks and Recreation District (BPRD). Employee is responsible for safe, efficient operation of equipment and tools while following established work and safety procedures.

JOB DUTIES AND TASKS

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work to be performed by the individual within this classification. Essential Functions

  • Assist with planting, watering, and weeding of flower beds, trees, and shrubs in parks, sports complexes, along trails, and around facilities. Additional maintenance tasks include picking up litter, painting, mulching, staking and pruning trees.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of all equipment including trucks, water pumps, weed trimmers, push mowers, and various hand tools along with chemicals.
  • Employee may be responsible for performing skilled assignments; all seasonal staff are expected to take direction from designated supervisors.
  • Employee is responsible for informing a supervisor of job related problems, damaged equipment, building damage, potential safety concerns, and to inform supervisor of current work assignment progress.
  • Employee may be called upon to clean rest rooms, make landfill runs and to perform other general maintenance work assignments.
  • Employee will assist individuals and groups as needed within the policies and procedures of the Bismarck Parks and Recreation District.
  • Follow all BPRD safety policies and procedures outlined in the Risk Management Handbook.
  • Complete all necessary payroll forms and utilize the electronic time and attendance timekeeping system.
  • Understand and follow the standard operating procedures outlined in the employee manual.
  • Understand and follow the Human Resource Policy and Procedure Handbook items related to this position.
  • Represent BPRD in a professional and positive manner. BPRD issues clothing and equipment to employees and the issued items are to be used in an appropriate manner, not inconsistent with the image BPRD wishes to convey to the public.

Other Duties and Tasks

  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships.
  • Arrive at scheduled time and be ready to work. Absences must have prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Responsible for personal neatness, attire, and communicating repair needs.
  • May be asked to perform a variety of tasks that range from skilled to unskilled work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license
  • Pass a background check prior to being hired and before starting work.
  • Be reliable, responsible and conscientious.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds alone or heavier amounts with the assistance of other employees.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Work is primarily outdoors and requires working under extreme conditions.
  • Employee is expected to wear clean full-length pants that are not tattered or torn and wear job appropriate footwear. Tennis shoes are not acceptable. BPRD provides T-shirts, caps and any safety gear that is required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Normal work hours are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, however hours will vary depending on need. Employee will be required to work weekends when scheduled.
