The Board of Park Commissioners has selected David Leker for the position of executive director of Bismarck Parks and Recreation District effective June 18, following the retirement of Kevin Klipfel.

Leker comes to BPRD with a wealth of executive leadership experience, having served as executive director of Fargo Park District and Beulah Park District. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota. For more than 30 years, Leker has worked in parks and recreation in North Dakota, leading strategic planning efforts, developing and managing parks and facilities during community growth, and working with government partners and user groups. He brings extensive knowledge of park district operations across the state to the position. Leker is an active member of the North Dakota Recreation & Park Association, serving a term as president, and is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional.

“The Board of Park Commissioners is pleased to announce the selection of a new executive director for Bismarck Parks and Recreation District to guide our next chapter,” says Mark Zimmerman, Board of Park Commissioners president. “Dave demonstrated the leadership, communication skills, and strategic vision necessary to lead a Gold Medal Award-winning, CAPRA‑accredited park district, oversee a complex organization and budget, and continue to build strong partnerships that enhance parks, facilities, programs, and recreation opportunities for residents and visitors throughout our community.”

“I am very excited about this new opportunity in such a great North Dakota city,” says Leker. “Bismarck Parks and Recreation District has long been recognized as a state and national leader in the field. Through my involvement with the North Dakota Recreation & Park Association, I have had the opportunity to get to know the last three executive directors as well as many of the dedicated staff members. With the strong leadership of the Board of Park Commissioners and the tremendous knowledge and experience of the staff, I am confident BPRD will continue the outstanding tradition it has built over the past 99 years serving the Bismarck community. I look forward to engaging with residents, partners, and stakeholders and working alongside so many great people in such a beautiful and thriving city.”
