Outdoor winter activities, such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, and ice skating, depend on weather and snow conditions.

Cross-Country Skiing, Kicksledding, and Snowshoeing

Season Status

  • As of December 9, cross-country ski trails are closed until further notice.

Cross-Country Skiing Locations and Hours

Kicksledding Location

Riverwood Golf Course: same hours as cross-country skiing

Snowshoeing Locations

Snowshoeing is allowed on any non-paved trail, such as Sleepy Hollow Park bike trail, Bill Mills Nature Trail, East Sibley Nature Trail, and McDowell Dam Recreation Area trail loop. You can also snowshoe along the sides of paved trails and in open park space.

Need to Know

  • Cross-country ski trails are groomed for the season as soon as there is adequate snow cover.
  • Snowshoeing is allowed alongside ski trails but not on them.
  • Riverwood Cross Country Trail Fee: $2 per person per use payable at the Riverwood pro shop

Equipment Rentals at Riverwood Golf Course

Kicksleds, skis, and snowshoes may be used at other BPRD locations but must be returned to Riverwood.

Outdoor Skating Rinks

Six locations have outdoor hockey and pleasure rinks, while one location has only a hockey rink. View rinks and warming house hours.

Season Status

Opening day for the 2025-2026 season is based on snow and weather conditions.

Warming House Hours

  • Saturday-Sunday and Public School Holidays: 12:00-5:00pm
  • Thanksgiving Day: closed
  • Christmas Eve: 11:00am-3:00pm
  • Christmas Day: closed

Need to Know

  • If there is an inadequate amount of snow on the hill, the warming house and hill will be closed.
  • THINK SAFETY! Bismarck Parks and Recreation District reminds everyone to use extreme caution and keep safety in mind when using the sledding hills and all outdoor facilities.
